  • Having seen this quaint looking pub closed for a considerable period of time before reopening, I am very impressed with the layout since it reopened. Moreover though, the menu has also evolved into something excellent and I would commend anyone looking for a Sunday Lunch venue to look no further than this establishment.

I haven’t yet had an evening meal here since it opened so cannot comment as to its latest menu choice. However, I shall make a point of dining here again soon some evening so I can do just exactly that.

An Excellent Sunday Lunch and Atmosphere!

  • What a good surprise decor wise! Lovely place with happy and helpful staff! Good selection of drinks and all. But unfortunately, food was a disappointment: we ordered the pasta with pesto and it was overcooked, there were far too many pine nuts and it was just blend…. we also had the pulled pork chilli which we a bit better than the pasta. Dishes are overpriced for the quality they are. I will definitely go back there because of the atmosphere and staff but I will stick to drinks only.

  • There is no shortage of places to eat on the Gloucester Road but if you live nearby as we do another choice is always welcome. We have visting the Ale House several times & about to return again with friends. We have always been more than happy with our dining experience each time we have visited.
The renovations from the poor old broken down Foresters have been done very well. The magnificent & unspoilt Victorian exterior (which probably has a preservation order on it) has thankfully been maintained & the interior has been done sympathetically retaining the best features such as the grand staircase & other woodwork. We tend to sit upstairs, especially if we are eating as downstairs tables are limited. Some evenings there is live music down in the main bar which if you are eating upstairs is ideal & really adds a great atmosphere.
As said before the young staff are great, kind & helpful. All are on top of their game.
Ok the food. We have only eaten dinner in the evenings from the main menu so that is all I can comment on. The menu is small. I do worry sometimes about huge menus being produced from a smallish kitchen. Hmm. Everything here is clearly cooked fresh, individually & to order. Now the fish & chips is the best of any pub on the Gloucester Road. By a good margin. So much so that we keep chosing it again & again. The steaks are also excellent. You may have to ask about the small choice of puddings but if the Eton Mess is available do not hesitate.
Drinks – average prices for the Gloucester Road but a wider choice than some places. The wine choices are superior to most of the other pubs & as someone else mentioned, their wine special offer night is a real bargain for some high quality wines. They also have special beer offers on other nights.
They seem to be doing well here as they deserve. Clearly a lot of effort is being put in. A welcome addition just a short walk away. See you again soon!

    Good for locals like us!

  • My boyfriend and I regularly go here now as it’s our favourite place on Gloucester Road. The food is so good and full of flavour, nicest roast dinner I’ve ever had. The staff are so welcoming and remember our drinks which is always important! The pub quiz is particularly great on Sundays, lots of fun rounds and bonus points for silly things.

Amazing food, staff, and pub quiz!

  • Although menu is a tad limited the food is excellent and very good value including the wine! it is a pub after all!’
Service very good all staff are also excellent and very professional,
Beers are great value at £2.70 a pint and obviously someone takes pride in them!
Been back a few times now and enjoyed it every time! Probably my favourite gastro pub at the mo and would have no hesitation in recommending it
    Regards kevin.

Friday Eve Dinner and Couple of Beers

  • Popped in for a drink on a busy Fri night and as we came across the table stayed for unexpected food.

Firstly v reasonable cask ales at £2.70 a pint and they had Propper Job on my fav. They also have a wide range of gins and I got to try a delicious slow gin and tonic.

I’ve tried a few burgers in Bristol and this one was way up there. Med rare which is fine by me, juicy and tender with lovely accompaniments.

Nice surroundings, good food and drink, I’ll be back

    Great Burger!

  • Lovely Sunday lunch with family celebrating my Grandson’s 4th birthday. Staff were very accommodating and the Sunday Roast was one of the nicest I’ve had. Whilst I didn’t try myself the cask ale at £2.70 a pint also went down well. Will certainly be back.

    Lovely Sunday Lunch with Family

  • Called in whilst in the Bristol area and was not disappointed. We had the antipasti starter with some lovely king prawns both were really tasty and good sized portions. We then had the homemade chicken, mushroom and bacon pie (we both agreed it was the best we’d had anywhere) and the fillet steak (also excellent.
We were served by a very efficient young lady that was running her little socks off up and down the stairs bless her as the place was already very busy and it was still early at 7.30pm but she still found the time to ask everyone eating if everything was ok with the food.
I highly recommend this place and will most definitely be returning the next time I’m in Bristol.

  • Second time having a roast at G road today. Was absolutely spot on. Great service, very friendly staff and attentive. Asked for a bit more gravy but when we digged in a bit we found we didn’t really need more! Also asked for extra veg for my mum as she is dieting, was not a problem. They also brought us out two dauphinois potato and broccoli cheese sort of bake side things! On the house. Not for me but very nice of them. Top ingredients. Definitely be returning. Great little pub.

  • We visited with vegetarian grandma on a Sunday. We had roasts planned (good choice of chicken, pork or beef), but on arrival 2 of my kids announced they ‘hate roasts’.

Obviously, it was too late to go elsewhere but the waiter/barman suggested he could do us chicken and chips. He was really helpful and when the food arrived it was very tasty.

Very stylish and yet relaxed venue.

A great addition to the burgeoning Glos Rd food scene.
